BACKGROUND

The journey of GM could be traced back to 1887 when Ransom E. Olds started the Olds Motor Vehicle Company Inc., (OMVC) in Michigan, USA, and started selling vehicles under the Oldsmobile brand. In May 1903, Buick Motor Company (Buick) was incorporated by David Dunbar Buick and Buick started manufacturing and selling vehicles by 1907. Despite having a good start and selling 6,500 vehicles per year between 1901 and 1908, OMVC started to face severe competition from other major automobile companies like Buick, Cadillac Automobile Company (Cadillac), and Oakland Motor Car Company (OMCC). In 1908, William Crapo Durant (Durant) started GM as a holding company for Buick. The same year, Durant bought OMVC. In 1909, GM bought Cadillac and OMCC. .
